3 Careers for the Modern Mum
Being a mother can sometimes feel like a full-time job in itself. Many parents find that remaining in, or returning to, work can help them to get some time away from their childcare responsibilities, as well as to give them a meaningful career path. When you start to consider looking for a job, you might want to consider how the role will impact your family, as well as any benefits it may bring.
Physical Therapist
If science has always been one of your strong points, but you’d rather not work with actual medicine or potentially horrific emergencies, you may want to consider the world of physical therapy – learn how to become a physical therapist here. As a Mum, this may also benefit you, as you will learn the skills to help overcome injuries, and regain mobility. If your children participate in a lot of sporting activities, the skills you learn within your career could help them when they get injured, preventing long term pain or damage. In addition to this, the salary range for a physical therapist can be fairly lucrative, allowing you to continue providing for your family’s needs.
Engineering
While there is of call for roles to have less gender bias, some careers do see more men than women, and vice versa. If you really want to show your children that you can achieve anything, no matter your biological sex, you might want to consider a career in engineering. Currently, approximately only 11% of engineers are female, meaning it is still classed as a “male role”. This could help your children to cast aside gender biases as they grow up, both in terms of future careers and personal preferences. There may be a great deal of surprise that you, a female, has opted for a career in this field, but you may also find that people are
impressed with what you do, and the independence that it could bring to your daily life in terms of being able to fix and create things yourself.
Freelancer
Out of the UK FTSE 100, only 6 CEOs are women, with the rest being men. If you would rather head your own company than work for someone else and have a bit of flexibility alongside it, you might want to think about working on a freelance or sole trader basis. This would render you self-employed, meaning you would need to file your own tax returns. While work isn’t always guaranteed, it would mean that you can drop your children off at school, pick them up at the end of the day, and even attend any activities for them, as long as you schedule your work around these times. Some modern mothers don’t want to have to
choose between a career and their children, which is where working for yourself can be beneficial.
Choosing a career that will make you happy, and benefit your children, may seem difficult but, ultimately, it comes down to the kind of role model you wish to be for your children.
