Now, more than ever, it’s vital that we look after our little ones’ health. There can be an overwhelming number of things to keep in mind when trying to keep your child safe, but luckily there are a handful of small, easy tips you can keep in mind to help you best protect your child.
- Stay up to date with your immunisations
The first, and most important way to keep your baby healthy is by getting them vaccinated as soon as possible. By vaccinating your child, you close the door to a number of potentially nasty illnesses and boost your baby’s immune system.
On the other hand, the baby isn’t the only person who needs to be vaccinated. As a parent, you should keep up with your own immunisations too. You’re going to be spending a lot of time in close proximity with your child, and any weaknesses in your immunity will have an effect on those around you. Get in touch with your doctor and check if you’re eligible for any shots or boosters, and give your baby that extra layer of protection- a healthy family is a happy family.
- Keep their surroundings safe
While your child is still young, they’re especially vulnerable to outside germs and illnesses. This is because they haven’t had the chance to build up their natural immunity yet, so the type of germs which the average grown-up may not even notice will have a much more profound effect. It’s important to be mindful of this and, while it’s normal for your child to catch the common cold a number of times, you don’t want them to be exposed to something more potentially harmful.
Keep their surroundings clean and disinfected. Wash your baby’s hands (and your own!) whenever possible, and encourage them to keep them away from their face. Remember to sanitise your child’s toys regularly to avoid any harmful buildup- this can be easily done with a warm cloth and some soapy water.
- Use the proper precautions
Illness isn’t the only risk to your newborn’s health. It’s vital that the furniture and equipment you use is trusted and sufficient to keep your child safe. It might be worth triple checking your crib is up to snuff, or investing in a Venicci to ensure your child has every safety measure it needs.
- Watch your child’s diet
Keeping a regular feeding schedule isn’t a walk in the park, but can tremendously help to boost your child’s natural immunity. Either by breastfeeding or using a high-quality formula, you can keep your baby’s nutritional needs met.
In addition to this, if you’re breastfeeding and find yourself suffering from a cold or flu, this can actually be a good thing. Your body’s response to the illness shows itself in the form of antibodies- the body’s medicine which helps us recover from sickness naturally. These can be passed along through your breast milk to your baby, giving them a little boost of resistance.
