Baby monitors are a relatively new product for parents, yet they are becoming increasingly popular as the years go by. It is a must-have for most parents now. These new devices can be used to watch your baby from your smart phone or tablet- enabling you to monitor how your baby is doing whilst they are sleeping- without having to creep into their room and potentially wake them. They can also be used to check in on your baby whilst you are working.
This article by MyBump2Baby brings you the 6 Best Baby Monitors.
What are the different types of baby monitor?
Audio Only Monitor
Sound/audio monitors are primarily used to listen out for when your baby cries whilst you are in another room of the house. They are the most inexpensive type of baby monitor, and usually consist of two parts: a sensor and a speaker (the sensor being in the baby’s room to listen for your baby’s cries, and the speaker being put near the parents so they can hear the baby’s cries).
Video Baby Monitor
Video and audio monitors are used to capture both video and audio of your baby via a camera with a built in microphone. Video camera monitors are usually paired with a small monitor screen (for the parents to see and listen to their baby) or an app so they can see and hear their baby on their phone/tablet and even get notifications when they cry. Most video monitors need to be mounted/put on a shelf where the camera will be able to clearly see the cot and plugged in.
Movement Monitors
Movement monitors are essentially used to check your baby’s well being: I.e. that they are still moving and breathing. Movement monitors are perfect to give peace of mind to parents that their little one is breathing just fine- as most video baby monitors do not pick up little movements like a baby’s breathing. When your baby stops moving/breathing, an alert will be sent to the parents.
How do I choose the right baby monitor?
Camera Quality
Whilst the majority of video baby monitors now have HD video, there are still some baby monitors which have poor quality. It is also good to question whether or not you would like night vision on your baby monitor, so you can see your baby clearly in the dark as well as light.
Connectivity
The two usual forms of connection between the baby monitor and video/audio “receiver” is either their own signal, or your home wifi.
If the baby monitor operates on your home Wi-Fi, it becomes much more accessible, meaning you can watch your baby on your phone or tablet, whether you’re out and about or inside the house. Multiple devices will also be able to connect to the baby monitor (for example your phone and your partner’s phone) for peace of mind.
Power Supply
Another factor to consider when buying a baby monitor is how your baby monitor is powered and how long the power supply can last. For example, would you prefer a baby monitor powered by battery or by power cable? How long would you need the baby monitor to be able to operate for at any given time?
Range
How far away are you able to go from your baby monitor and still be able to receive video/audio?
This particular statistic can vary greatly between baby monitors.
Alerts
Many video baby monitors provide notifications, or alerts, for when you baby moves or cries. This is particularly useful as most parents cannot watch the baby monitor at all times.
Viewing Angle
Would you like a baby monitor which can rotate 360 degrees or one that stays static? Or how about a baby monitor that moves to track movement, or one that stays in place regardless of where your baby goes? These are important things to think about when buying a baby monitor.
