From a young age it is drummed into men ‘man up’ or act ‘like a man’, which we are effectively saying, suppress your feelings, don’t show emotion, stop feeling those feelings. We’ve created this idea of masculinity that it is about coping, providing and being strong.
Some men feel that perceived weakness is not an option, because it would jeopardise their masculinity. This is what costs men dearly, supressing important emotions, not allowing themselves to express their vulnerabilities.
If you haven’t already, then I strongly recommend watching Brene Brown’s TED talks on ‘The Power of Vulnerability’. She has spent decades studying vulnerability, shame and empathy. She brings to life how being vulnerable, showing our weaknesses, is in fact courageous and brave.
“Vunerability is not weakness, it’s our greatest measure of courage“Brene Brown
The mask of masculinity and living up to the big ideal of what a ‘good and powerful man’ should look like, can breed insecurities and low self-esteem. Which can then have an ultimate impact on mental health.
How can we offer support?
Many employee benefits now offer the option of employee assistance programmes.
It’s an active and vibrant support system that provides a wide array of information, advice, counselling and services for health and wellbeing. It enables organisations to introduce all kinds of wellness initiatives around the pertinent issues facing employees today.
Importantly, it is also completely confidential, there is no data shared with the employer on who has utilised the services.
Employee Assistance Programmes is not just a mental health support helpline, but a tool to help manage wellbeing in all aspects of your life.
