Music and the development of musical skills is at the very centre of each and every class. We do lots of bouncing, swaying, rolling, tapping, walking (carrying them) at different speeds, and play different instruments to and with them so that they can also hear and feel the pulse – such an important aspect of learning music!
We focus on the human voice – it is the child’s first instrument, everyone has one, and with time everyone can learn to use it well. Without distracting backing tracks, singing alone enables the baby/child to really hear and begin to replicate the pitches, rhythms and words of the song. Babies respond to the sing-song parent voice, they are calmed by singing, and they are captivated by music. If this is carefully nurtured from a young age, this can be developed into an instinctive, natural understanding and musical ability. We choose the songs extremely carefully. The songs must be started at the correct pitch so that it is too low or too high for them, and the melody itself must be within a certain number of consecutive notes. Many traditional children’s songs do not fall into this category – so you won’t find the same songs in a Colourstrings class as you might at the Library Bounce & Rhymes or at many other music classes.
We have structure and routine – always the bee, the ball, some moving around and teddies with listening, and everyone soon comes to know what to expect and look forward to the next part. Classes are gentle, fun and musical.
