Growing Wild is Barnsley’s first outdoor nursery, located on Wigfield Farm, opposite Worsbrough Country Park, just off the A61 and 5 minutes from J36 M1. We provide care for children aged 2 to 5 years and accept childcare vouchers and government funding.
Founded in October 2019 by Janet Packer and Lindsey Bielby, the nursery welcomes around 30 children Monday to Friday and has a playgroup on Friday mornings for younger ones. We also have a holiday club for 5 to 11 year olds.
Our ethos is to give children ‘the time, space and freedom to play and learn naturally’, with a curriculum developed from the natural world, the changing seasons and the children’s interests, guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The children play outdoors, with two large poly tunnels for shelter, toileting and changing. Playing in mixed ages allows children to build relationships, collaborate and learn from others, as well as developing creativity, empathy and leadership. This supports our vision ‘to inspire and enable children to be healthy, happy and capable individuals, who care for each other and their world (now and in the future).’ Our values include, wellbeing, family, community and sustainability.
We have a strong and highly skilled staff team that has grown from four to fifteen over the past two and a half years. Our staff are well qualified and trained to work outdoors with young children and work in ratios that are higher than the government requirement, to ensure safety, but also to afford excellent opportunities and support for children to reach their full potential.
