When to start swimming with your baby?
The sooner you can get your little one into the pool the better. Young babies are very open to new experiences and because they have just spent 9 months in the womb they generally feel quite at home in the water.
Babies under 3 months and under 12lbs are not able to regulate their body temperate in the way we are so we advise only taking them to a toasty warm hydrotherapy pool (34-35 degrees). During your first trip to the pool look out for signs that your baby is cold and if necessary, wrap them in a warm towel and try again later.
As babies get older they can become more wary of new experiences, whether that is the first session at nursery or their first time in the shower. They also develop more of a character; they have a clearer idea about what they want to do and won’t necessarily go along with your plans. So getting them into the pool can be a bit trickier. Here at Water Babies we can recommend certain techniques to try during bath time as the bath is a safe and easy place to start introducing your baby to water.
It is important that the experience is relaxed and happy for both of you so consider what is best for you when choosing when and where to swim. Find a time and location that allows you to be relaxed as possible in the water because your baby will be very conscious of your reactions. If you are stressed or rushed then baby may not enjoy themselves.
What we do
One of our core philosophies is that we teach you to teach your baby to swim – so we’ll always explain why we’re doing something, as well as carefully demonstrate exactly what to do. Classes are kept small, with one carer per baby in the pool, and last for half an hour. The cost of our 10 week chapters, including a place on our professional underwater photoshoot, is £150.
Our main aim is to enable your child to be incredibly confident and happy in the water, right from the word go. We teach all core principles of swimming and water safety in a baby-friendly way, developing and building on new skills each week; our world-class teachers use a structured, progressive programme based on many years of experience and rigorous research. Although the course is very structured, the great thing is that neither you nor your baby will ever actually feel like you’re in a lesson – we just concentrate on making sure that the two of you are relaxed in the water and having lots of splashy-splashy fun with lots of singing, games and stimulation.
