Written by: Jess Bleeze
Last week myself and my daughter had the great pleasure of being part of Phonics Stars Croydon, Coulsdon and Caterham trial week for their new online baby and toddler group.
Phonics Stars Croydon, Coulsdon and Caterham is run by the lovely Gemma and they have just celebrated their 1st Birthday! Gemma has a background in teaching after being a teaching assistant for children with special needs. She also attended Phonics Star classes with her own child before starting her own franchise so that her passion of teaching could fit in with her lifestyle as a mum too.
What do Phonics Stars do?
Phonic Stars combine learning to read and write with fun and have a wealth of different activities to engage and help children of all ages and backgrounds; but it is so much more than just phonics. They cover the whole Early Years Foundation Stage, including phonics, numeracy, creativity, and the world around us with a different theme each week.
Online Access – You don’t need to be local!!!
Gemma really does try to make her classes as inclusive as possible and knows first hand how different approaches are needed depending on a specific child’s needs. Usually she would hold classes in halls or attend schools to run her session but given the current situation this hasn’t been possible and like so many others she has adapted and taken the classes online! This means that anyone, even if not local can sign up, pay the fee and access these amazing classes.
What is Included?
Classes are aimed at 2-5 years and are run via a Facebook group which you are added too for the month that you have signed up too. They are completely obligation free and you can cancel at anytime. The theme changes each month so that if you did stay on your child wouldn’t be repeating the same activity.
PDF downloads are added to the files section so that you have everything you need to join in the class.
Gemma then does a live or uploads a mini session focusing on one activity. I found this so good as it meant I didn’t have to keep my little one engaged for too long if she didn’t want too. I personally found 5 minutes here and there with these activities suited my daughter much better than trying to get her to do them all in a 30 or 45 minute block.
Gemma understands every child is different and therefore the videos are saved to the group and can be accessed at any time and however many times you like during your time in the group! So if you miss the live or have something else on at that time it doesn’t mean you have to miss out you can revisit it!
Online Prices for the Group
Classes are £20 for 4 sessions (a month), Gemma then does a live or uploads 5 mini sessions focusing on one activity each. You will also of course be able to contact Gemma if you have any questions or queries or need a bit of advice. You’ll also get a notification of when she is about to go live thanks to the amazing messenger bot so you can easily click the link and go straight there… no searching for the group and missing the start if you’re watching live! How clever is that!
The Woodland Theme
There was a woodland theme to the trial week and activates included things such as a sound tree, hedgehog creative activity among others. We enjoyed searching our garden for different leaves and flowers and stones etc to use to them make an animal, we use them to then sound out and say what we were doing, we would specifically say that this leaf is going up high for the head, this stone down low for a foot. This stone is smooth and round just like an eye. So this gave my 2 year old knowledge of placement, body parts, and helped to encourage her descriptive words… and she was very impressed with her creation!
The sound tree was adapted to make it work for my little one, Gemma again encouraged this by including a blank version in the PDF Downloads. As my daughter is only 2 we did simple single sounds like S, T, P, A, B and then thought of animals and other words which began with this sounds. We’ve done this a few times a day now and it really has encouraged my daughter to learn new words which previously she hadn’t been very interested in.
We also joined in with their Play, Go, Party™️ to promote building muscle and grip by doing things like rolling Play Doh and tracing the shape of letters. This in turn helps with her pen grip and eventually with her writing.
How Can I Join Phonic Stars Online
All in all these sessions provided a simple and fun activity for my little one to do with no stress of having to do it at a specific time. I could see changes in the way she was thinking about things and it taught me new ways of how I could engage and encourage her phonics to make it more fun and interactive. I would recommend these classes to anyone who wants to help their little one learn in a fun, exciting and stress free way.
