Getting pregnant
So, you’ve decided to start trying for a baby, congratulations! This is such an exciting part of life to be embarking on. There are many reasons why people may choose to or not to have children. It’s important that you do the right thing for you.
For some women, getting pregnant can feel like a breeze, but for others, it can take some time. It’s important to be sensitive towards this. The journey of getting pregnant is often referred to as a trying to conceive journey or TTC.
Upon getting pregnant, your body and hormones will change a lot. The best way to confirm pregnancy is through a home pregnancy test. A home pregnancy test will measure the level of hCG in your urine. hCG is only present during pregnancy and rises rapidly in the first trimester before levelling off later on.
If you would like to maximise your chances of getting pregnant, we recommend using our fertility planner! Our fertility planner will help you to track your menstrual cycle and find your fertile window.
After you discover your pregnancy, you should let your healthcare provider know. They can add you to a list to be seen by a midwife for various tests.
What is fertility?
Let’s start at the beginning of the pregnancy journey; what is fertility? Fertility is simply the ability to conceive a baby naturally through unprotected sex.
In contrast, infertility can occur when you are unable to conceive. Infertility can affect both men and women. In some cases, people may choose to have fertility treatment, such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF).
It can feel like you’ve been waiting for ages when trying to become pregnant. It is usually recommended that you continue trying for up to 12 months before seeking advice. There are various reasons why either gender may be experiencing infertility. Some reasons can include age, obesity, hormonal imbalances and more.
Are some women more fertile than others?
Technically yes, some women can be more fertile than others. You might be wondering, ‘why am I so fertile?’ and there are many factors that affect fertility. These can include age, genetics and weight.
Women tend to be most fertile during their 20s. When women reach 35, it can start to become more difficult to conceive. However, that doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to. Speak to a doctor if you are concerned about getting pregnant.
Many women use ovulation tests to identify when they are ovulating. Ovulation is the process of releasing an egg from the ovaries. Every menstrual cycle is different, so don’t compare yourself to others. In a 28-day menstrual cycle, most would ovulate around days 12 – 14.
Can a woman be too fertile?
Having high fertility isn’t a bad thing. It may be identified in women who have a higher-than-average egg count. This means you may continue to ovulate for longer, allowing you the chance to get pregnant.
Some women also find that their cycle is correct to the exact date every time. This may also be a sign of high fertility. It’s important to start thinking about having children if and when you are ready to.
How long does it take to get pregnant?
There is no real way of knowing how long it will take you to get pregnant. This is because there are so many factors that can influence getting pregnant.
If you have been taking regular birth control, you may have to wait for this to leave your system. Some methods, such as the pill, can be out of your system after a short while. In comparison, others can take months before your regular cycle returns to normal. Therefore, it’s important to consider your conception plans when choosing a birth control method. Ensure that you know this information before choosing a method.
Some women consider their cervical mucus at different stages of their menstrual cycle to assess their fertility. This is called the cervical mucus method. For example, a clear, slippery cervical mucus (also referred to as clear jelly like discharge or egg white discharge) may indicate that you are more fertile.
It is estimated that most couples will become pregnant within 12 months of having regular unprotected sex. You may wish to seek advice after this point. If you are over 35, you may wish to see advice after around six months of trying. Infertility can impact 1 in 7 couples trying for a baby. It can be common but is often not talked about enough.
If you are trying to get pregnant, an ovulation calculator is a great tool to use.
How to improve the chances of getting pregnant
So, how can you improve the chances of getting pregnant?
In most cases, pregnancy will occur when the body is ready. It can feel like you’ve been waiting a while. It’s a good idea to try and lead a balanced lifestyle and promote good health. This means having a balanced diet, resting when necessary and exercising regularly.
Additionally, you may find it useful to take some pre-pregnancy vitamins. You could speak to a healthcare provider to find out which vitamins will be the most appropriate for you. Vitamin D is a good vitamin to take to support the immune system.
Tracking your ovulation may help you to understand your cycle better. Ovulation tests are readily available and easy to use. The tests measure the amount of LH (luteinizing hormone) in your urine. They can help you to track your regular cycle and identify your most fertile window.
Trying to conceive is generally a waiting game, but remaining healthy may help to support fertility. When trying to conceive, it’s also advised that you avoid alcohol, as this may not help fertility chances.
Signs of high fertility in a woman
Regular periods
Having regular menstrual bleeding patterns may sound like a fairly obvious sign, but many women do experience irregular periods. Having slightly irregular periods doesn’t mean that you’re not fertile. However, if your periods are on time each month, it’s a good sign that you have high fertility.
Ovulating
If you have regular periods, you’ll be ovulating, too, during your monthly cycle. Ovulation is essential for you to become pregnant naturally. When conception occurs, sperm travels through the uterus to fertilise the egg released during the ovulation cycle.
You can use ovulation tests to find out if you are ovulating. Most women ovulate at the same time each month.
Antral follicle count
Your antral follicle count may be measured as part of fertility testing. The process of measuring involves the use of a transvaginal ultrasound. A transvaginal ultrasound involves a small tube being inserted into the vagina to check reproductive organs.
A person’s antral follicle count generally declines with age as you become less fertile. A higher count would indicate a higher chance of fertility. High fertility signs in a woman generally mean it may be easier to conceive.
What can cause low fertility?
A number of factors can cause lower fertility. However, having potentially lower fertility does not mean you can’t get pregnant. Speak to your doctor if you have any concerns regarding your fertility.
Menopause
We’re often taught that menopause is a long way away. In most cases, it begins between the ages of 45 and 55; however, it can be sooner than this. Menopause typically begins when your periods stop. There are some factors that can cause this to happen early, such as some medical treatments or procedures. There are many signs of menopause, such as hot flashes, low mood and trouble sleeping.
Endometriosis
Endometriosis occurs when tissue grows in places other than the womb, such as in the ovaries and the fallopian tubes. In addition to difficulty conceiving, you may experience painful cramps and other symptoms, like heavier periods.
There is no method of curing endometriosis, but there are treatments that may relieve some symptoms for those dealing with it.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
Polycystic ovary syndrome can cause changes to the natural way that the body releases an egg. This can cause you to experience irregular periods or no ovulation, which means no periods at all.
PCOS can run in families, and there is currently no way of curing it. Treatments are available to help with symptoms and getting pregnant.
Seek medical advice if you suffer from any of these conditions and are trying to conceive. A professional can offer the best advice and treatment if necessary. Additionally, you may be referred to a fertility expert who can assess any other signs that may be causing a fertility problem. For example, in men, a low sperm count can cause lower fertility.
We hope this article has been useful regarding the signs of high fertility in a woman. Good luck with your trying-to-conceive journey. Seek advice when recommended based on your age.
