We have been loving our family walks recently, family walking has been one of the only things we have been allowed to do during the lockdown so we took full advantage. We started with taking a hot drink in a flask with easy walks and we have now built our way up to walking more difficult trails as a family in places a little further a field. We recently went to Bolton Abbey for the day which was lovely, you can read our review here.
We had the pleasure of being gifted some lovely walk attire from Regatta and thought it was the perfect opportunity to test out the products and provide you with a list of what to wear on a family walk for all weather conditions so that you are fully equipped for your walk no matter the weather.
If you are planning on going on a family walk, it is important to make sure that you are fully prepared, regardless of the weather.
What do you need to bring on a family walk?
Walking Gear & Walking Essentials
Warm Layers and Thin Layers
British weather can be very unpredictable, so it is important that you come fully prepared with light layers and warm weathers so you are able to tackle your family walk, no matter the temperature!
You should bring waterproof jackets for cold weather and thin layers- such as light tops and trousers- for warm weather.
Regatta offer great, inexpensive and warm, waterproof jackets for both men and women– designed with softshell fabric which stretches and moves with you.
The jackets we received are a dream, they stop the sweat drenched walks. Regatta have such a good name amongst walkers people seem to think the jackets will be more expensive jackets but actually they are very affordble.

Hiking Clothes
When you go on a long family walking trip, it is important to come stocked with plenty of clothes- including spare clothes in case the clothes you’re wearing get very wet or muddy.
Waterproof trousers and loose fitting, comfortable tops are a must. Your under-layers shouldn’t be too thick (unless you are hiking in winter!), just in case you get too hot.
Clothing made from merino wool is a brilliant choice. Clothing items made from merino wool are soft on your skin, dry quickly, are odor resistant and manage moisture and sweat better than most other materials.

Walking Boots
Comfortable walking shoes/boots are one of the most important pieces of equipment- they should be the right size (to avoid damaging your feet), waterproof and light weight.

Thick Socks
You will need plenty of walking socks for your family walk! Fungus grows in sock fibers and your warm, sweaty feet provide the perfect breeding ground.
You should avoid mcotton socks, because, even though they are comfortable, they absorb moisture, dry slowly and provide no insulation when wet.
If your feet get wet and you wear wet socks for long periods of time, you put yourself at risk of developing a condition called immersion foot syndrome, or “trench foot”. It is essential that you change your socks regularly.
Wearing thick, durable socks is important for your walk; your feet need to be comfortable to avoid rubbing or blisters!

Hat and Gloves
When hiking in colder seasons, it is crucial to bring as much protection from the cold as possible, including hats and gloves. You should buy beanies and gloves that have thermal protection and are breathable and comfortable.

Puddle Suits for Toddlers
Puddle suits are definitely a great idea to keep your toddler warm, comfortable and protected from the rain on your walks. George absolutely loves his puddlesuits as it means mummy isn’t constantly telling him to avoid muddy puddles. We also used to take multiple outfit changes as I was paranoid about him getting wet and staying wet on our walks.
Regatta offer a brilliant range of puddle suits to suit your toddler’s preference- whether they’d prefer to wear a lion puddle suit or a unicorn one.

You should make sure you stock up on extra food and drink to avoid having to cut your exciting family walk short.

If you are planning on going hiking in sunny weather, sun cream is a must to keep yourself and your family protected. It is recommended that you wear sun cream of at least SPF 30 to protect against UVB. You should buy sun cream with at least 4-star UVA protection.
