I only recommend products that I actually own and use. Some of the links you click on are what’s known as “affiliate links”. So if you do buy something from one of my links, I may earn a small commission at no cost to you.
If you are wondering how to start a mom blog, you have come to the right place.
First, let me introduce myself, I am Carla Lett, the founder of MyBump2Baby, and this very business started as a mum blog. I entered the blogging world during maternity leave back in 2016 as a mommy blogger.
A profitable mom blog can be life-changing, for me, what started as a hobby has become an incredible blogging business doing what I love, and I am so thankful for the life I have created.
Successful Mom Blog
Right now, as I sit here tapping away on my new delightful laptop, sipping my mocha in the hairdresser. Life is so good and flexible these days. I don’t even recognise my life compared to how it was before.
We were literally on the bread line when I started my blog, and now my blog is a six-figure blog, I mean, even typing that makes my heart skip a beat.
I know it seems cliche when someone says you can do anything you set your mind to, and I am proof that you actually can. If you want to start a mom blog, then go for it. Every successful blog begins with an idea.
Blogging has given me so much freedom in life, and I now earn more than I ever imagined possible, and I have more spare time than I ever had before.
I work 2 days per week (for my sanity) and the rest of the time is spent doing all the things I love, lunching, shopping, taking my little one out and the odd dribble nap with a crime documentary in the background here and there.
Today, I am going to share my top tips on how to start your own blog
Step 1 – Decide on Your Blog Niche.
What is a blog niche?
A blog niche is the topic area that you will be focusing on when writing your content. Having a clear blog niche will help your blog grow quickly.
Before anything else, you need to decide what type of mom blog niche you want to be. It could, of course, be just a general mum blog, but what types of things are you going to write about? Who do you want to help? Is there a bigger idea behind the blog? A business, a membership, courses, journals?… Deciding who you want to help is a big part of starting a blog. Having a clear mom blog niche will help you structure your content for the win. There are lots of profitable blogging niches out there. You could have a hobby blog, a lifestyle blog, a recipe blog, a fitness blog, money mom blog just to name a few.
Step 2 – Choose your blog name.
Think about your blog name, do you want to be the main content creator behind the brand? You might initially but what about in 5 – 10 years? Do you want your blog to become something bigger?
If you call your blog your name, then the majority of content will be expected to come from you. If you choose a brand name rather than your name, you have more flexibility, and you could even sell it in the future.
Nowadays, MyBump2Baby is so much bigger than me, we have experts sharing knowledge from fertility to pre-school age, and no one is really relying on hearing from me, which means I can blog when I want, which is nice.
I do love blogging, so I always like finding a cosy corner with a blanket to put the world to rights on a keyboard, but it does feel nice that I have a choice. If my blog was Carlalett.com, then I wouldn’t have been able to grow it to the size it has grown. I didn’t plan it like this, it just happened, but I always advise my clients to think about what they want from their blog in the end, you should ask yourself the same question.
Step 3 -Check the Free Domain Name
Before you go on a mission to create logos and announce the exciting “mom blogger news” to your friends and family, you need to check the blog name is actually available. You can do that for free here
If you have a choice between co. uk or com, I would always opt for .co.uk if you want your audience to be UK-based or .com if you are going for a more global reach, .com will help more readers find you from all over the globe rather than just the UK.
It is important to remember to check that the social media handles are also available, as this could cause issues later down the line if the big brands are tagging the wrong person.
Step 4 – Register the Domain
Once you have checked all of the above, you want to register your domain (your website name). I personally recommend Bluehost to my clients as you can have everything (hosting, domain name and website) all within one place, which makes the tech side a little easier.
Step 5 – Web Hosting Set Up
The best way to explain a web hosting provider is to see it like a rent, you pay to rent a space online, this means that anyone in the world can find your website 24/7 once it is live too.
Again, I do recommend Bluehost for ease, but of course, you can shop around for web hosting.
Step 6 – Choose your blogging platform
If you are a new blogger, you may be tempted to opt for a free blogging platform, especially as your blog won’t be making money yet but choosing free blogging platforms is not the best choice if you want to start making money blogging.
With most of the free blog platforms, you won’t be able to monetise your blog, which is not ideal. We recommend using a WordPress blog as your blogging platform. Blue host works with wordpress.org so you can literally do everything on the bluehost platform.
With a WordPress blog you have complete control of your blog and you have the choice to monetise it in any way that you want. WordPress.org is the most popular platform, it is customisable and finally it is FREE all you need to pay for is website hosting and the domain name.
Step 7 – Creating your WordPress Blog
Now you have your name registered and your hosting sorted, it is time to create your website, Now, if you have used Bluehost the beauty of this is everything will connect together easily, if you have used another provider you will need to connect your website to your domain which can be a little tricky. There are plenty of tutorials available online if you need help.
Step 8 – Creating your New Mom Blogs
I like the theme Elementor, it is a drag-and-drop style website with a ready-made template, there is no coding required and it is just as simple as adding your text, amending the colours and adding your branding.
Step 9 – Ready Steady Blog
Now it is time to get some blogs written, good luck and if you want to you can join my newsletter for free tips. If you are ready to learn more about blogging, you can join my blogging course for support.
If you hate anything techy and want to hand everything over to someone else, we do offer a Ready Steady Blog package where we create your website and set everything up for you.

I love helping other mom blogs with blog post ideas, helpful tips and support by helping them connect with their target audience.
