Picking your Blog Name
Picking your blog name is really important it isn’t as simple as choosing one and launching. It can be incredibly difficult to choose the right name, and there are some important things you need to think about before choosing your blog name. If you have been brainstorming ideas, before you dive in feet first, let’s take a look at some things you should consider.
Here are 4 things you should consider before diving in and choosing your blog name.
1. What is the long-term aim of your blog?
Ok, so you have decided to launch a blog which is amazing but think about 5 years from now, or even 10 years from now, what do you want your life to look like?
This question is really important because if you would like to have maximum time with your family and have a blog that works for you instead of you working for it, you may want to steer clear of choosing your own name.
Luckily, before I launched my own blog I chose the blog name MyBump2Baby LTD and yes, although I was initially the only content creator at mybump2baby, as we have grown, we now have lots of experts contributing to articles to support parents as well as content creators that work for us.
Thanks to choosing that blog name, it means that I can blog as much or as little as I want, which suits me. It also means if we decide to sell the business it would be more desirable because someone can easily take it over, whereas if it was carlalett.com, then it is harder for someone else to take it over and start writing for it because of the potential readers who would only be expecting blogs from me.
You can still have a successful blog without just relying on yourself, in fact, some people would argue that a blog with multiple writers can actually be better for readership.
2. Your circumstances might change
You should think about your circumstances, you may want to create a personal blog called mummyof1, and then you go on to have more babies, this name will no longer fit with you, and you will have to change your blog name, your social media handles and it is a hassle you really don’t need.
As well as that, you also need to think about the direction of your blog in time, you might want to call your blog “Toddler Days Out” where you take your little one on days out and write a blog about it, but you have to think, as sad as it is, your toddler won’t be a toddler forever and will you still want to go round writing blogs about toddler days out when you don’t have a toddler anymore? Or would you want your blog name to be open for other opportunities and to grow with you. Choosing another name (less niche) with your target audience in mind means that you still have the flexibility to change your blog’s content as you change as a blogger.
3. Do you have a business you could put your blog on instead?
Sometimes business owners decide to launch blogs to maximise their income, and it makes sense, but quite often, the mistake they make is not combining the two on one website if the content they are going to be creating interests the same audience.
For example, Melissa has a swimming company, she also has two kids, she is fully booked for swimming, and her income has reached a plateau, she wants to increase her income without having to sacrifice her time in the future so decides to launch a blog, she creates a new website, pays for hosting and creates blogs about days out in her local area.
Now if Melissa put her blog on her swimming website instead 3 things would happen
1. She would save money
2. Parents (her ideal audience) would read her blogs and potentially purchase other items from her.
3. It would help her search engine optimisation, having an active blog is a great way to show Google (and other search engines) that your blog is regularly being updated and it also can help with getting your blog above competitors and at the top of Google.
4. Check Domain Availability – Is the blog name you want is actually available?
I have spoken to people who have decided on a name, registered Instagram accounts, Facebook accounts, and had logos designed only to realise that the name already has been reserved and they are unable to have the domain (website) for this name as someone else owns it, we do not want this to be the case for you. You can check the availability of domain names on Go Daddy.
Now you have all of those points, let’s have a look at some catchy blog name ideas for different
