So, what is the meaning of silky mom?
When we think of “silk” what words come to mind? For us, the main word that comes to “luxury”.
Silky moms and luxury come hand-in-hand.
Silky moms follow a parenting style that embraces modern conveniences, such as fast food, disposable diapers, and screen time- all the luxuries of modern life.
Some people describe silky moms as the stigma-destroyers of parenting- they represent the idea that there is nothing wrong with doing what makes your life convenient and that it is okay to have screen time and buy fast food to make mamahood that little bit easier.
How Do You Know if you are a Silky Mom?
If you opt for plastic products, convenience foods, screen time, and modern medication, you may be a silky mom.

- Are your children vaccinated? Silky moms ensure to vaccinate their children, according to the recommendations of health organizations.
- Do you use medications? Modern medicines are used by silky moms, according to their OBGYN’s or pediatrician’s recommendations.
- Do you use disposable diapers? Disposable diapers, particularly cheaper ones, are used by silky moms, for their convenience.
- Will your baby be public schooled? Silky mamas send their children to public school, rather than homeschooling, so their children can mix with other children and get the standard education from professionals.
- Do you formula feed? Silky moms use formula feeds, or a mix of formula and breast milk, for their babies.
- Do you bottle feed? Breastfed or not, silky moms use plastic bottles to feed their babies.
- Do your babies have screen time? Whether it’s on the phone, tablet, or television, screen time can be used to conveniently entertain your babies.

- If you scored between 6-9 then you are definitely a silky mama!
- If you scored a little lower, between 2 – 5, then you are likely to be a scrunchy mom.

No, we aren’t talking about the texture of carpets here. Let’s discuss what these terms mean.
What is a Crunchy Mom?
If silky moms are “heads”, then crunchy moms are “tails”.
These two parenting styles are on opposite sides of the parenting coin.
But what does it mean to be a crunchy mom?
A crunchy mom takes a natural approach to parenting and life. They are health, environment, and socially conscious- avoiding the use of plastics, any unorganic foods, medications, and public schooling.
You may have heard the terms “crunchy”, “granola”, “green” and “hippy”.
Here are a few comparisons between silky moms and crunchy moms:
- While silky moms put their babies in their own cribs, crunchy moms co-sleep with their babies.
- While silky moms buy convenience foods, crunchy moms cook organic and healthy foods and often even grow their own food. Crunchy moms never buy pre-made baby food, but instead make their own baby food.
- Silky moms feed their babies solid foods at the 6 month mark, whilst crunchy mums follow baby-led weaning.
- Silky moms use medication recommended by their OBGYN or pediatrician, while crunchy moms opt for more natural approaches to curing ailments, such as essential oils and diet changes.
- Silky moms vaccinate their children, as per the recommendation of health organisations, whilst crunchy moms opt not to vaccinate their babies.
- Crunchy moms exclusively breastfeed their babies until a year or older, and avoid the use of plastic bottles and formula.
- Crunchy moms do not use any plastic products, like disposable diapers, but silky moms do. Crunchy mamas instead opt for cloth diapers.
- Silky moms let their kids use modern technology and indulge in screen time, while crunchy moms have a no-tech rule.

For instance, certain scrunchy moms may choose to vaccinate their babies and use disposable diapers, while also exclusively breastfeeding and preparing natural foods.
On the other hand, another scrunchy mom might strongly advocate for natural home births and baby-wearing, while still believing in the benefits of modern medicine.
Yet another scrunchy mom might strive to be a natural parent, crafting all-organic homemade meals, homeschooling, and minimizing technology use. However, to prevent burnout, they may occasionally turn to conveniences like television and fast food. And that’s absolutely fine!
