Understanding your cycle
Women have menstrual cycles that involve having periods and ovulating. When you become pregnant, your periods stop for a while. A missing period is often one of the first signs of pregnancy that people notice.
Every menstrual cycle is different, some last longer, and some are shorter. The average cycle length is 28 days. The cycle is led by hormones, which vary throughout the cycle. For example, oestrogen is the hormone responsible for the release of the egg.
When you are ovulating and have sexual intercourse, you have the highest chance of getting pregnant. However, unless you study your cycle, it can be tricky to know when that is. You can purchase ovulation tests which show how much LH (luteinising hormone) you have in your urine. This can help you to understand the cycle if you are on a trying-to-conceive journey.
Some people experience a hormonal imbalance – seek advice if you are worried about this. There is support available.
Vaginal discharge in your cycle
Discharge is essentially vaginal lubrication, and it’s necessary to help keep you safe and protected. Discharge is normal, and what you may consider healthy watery discharge may be slightly different for someone else. Some people have thin discharge, and that’s normal for them.
You may notice vaginal discharge throughout your cycle, and it can change depending on where you’re up to. If you have watery discharge that feels like you’ve peed yourself, don’t panic! While this may not be the nicest sensation, it’s usually nothing to worry about. This kind can often make you feel as if you have leaked, but you likely haven’t.
Most of the time, you may notice a slightly milky liquid, and other times it can be clear. These types are normal and actually show that your body is doing what it’s meant to do!
Your vaginal discharge can change during sexual arousal, when you become pregnant, are on contraception and when you start going through the menopause. You may notice more discharge at these points.
What causes watery discharge like urine?
As we said, vaginal discharge changes depending on many things. This means that there are many causes and reasons why yours might have changed.
Ovulation is occurring
Your menstrual cycle plays a huge role in the body and can affect many things. Specifically, when you ovulate, your discharge may change. Ovulation discharge is usually milky and stretchy, like egg whites.
Ovulation occurs when your ovaries release an egg ready to be fertilised. If the egg becomes fertilised, it will travel and plant itself in a comfortable position, ready to grow. If the egg does not become fertilised, it will disintegrate and leave the body during a period.
Contraception
Using birth control can cause changes in your body. After all, most of them contain hormones which impact your cycle. Some hormonal birth control methods can also cause watery vaginal discharge to be in lesser supply. This can be referred to as vaginal dryness, and there are things you can do to help.
Contraception affects everyone differently, and one that works for you may not work for someone else. It’s all about finding a solution that works for you and your body. A contraceptive nurse will be happy to discuss your options.
Your period is due
Back to the cycle! If you have no period, just clear watery discharge, it could mean that your period is on its way! It is a good idea to track your periods. For those with irregular periods, it can be tricky to track them. You could speak to a doctor about irregular periods, and they can advise you.
These are the main things that can affect your vaginal discharge, but it may also be affected by your diet, sexual arousal, exercise and menopause. It’s important to care for your vaginal health.
Is wet watery discharge a sign of pregnancy?
Changes to your vaginal discharge could signify pregnancy in some cases. Or, it could be a sign that you are ovulating. You’ll likely get to know your body and how it works. Therefore, if you notice changes, it could be that something has changed in your body. Take a look at our blog on pregnancy symptoms at 4 weeks. You could also be 4 weeks pregnant with no symptoms.
The only way you can be sure about pregnancy is by taking a test. Home pregnancy tests can be purchased from most supermarkets and pharmacies. They will test the amount of hCG in your urine. This is a hormone that is released in pregnancy.
Later in pregnancy, a gushing feeling could be caused by your water breaking. This occurs when the baby’s protective sac breaks, releasing the amniotic fluid. It means that the baby is almost ready to arrive. Speak to your midwife if your waters break. Find out: can your water break without being dilated?
I’m leaking watery discharge but not pregnant
Your vaginal discharge changes depending on which point of your cycle you’re at. Therefore, if you have watery discharge and are not pregnant, it could mean your period is on the way. You can use a pregnancy test if you are unsure.
If you’re experiencing excessive watery discharge, you may wish to seek some advice. Remember that your ‘normal discharge’ is different to someone else’s.
Watery discharge feels like I peed myself
It can be a little unsettling when your vaginal discharge feels like urine. You might find yourself needing to visit the bathroom to check that you are not leaking. There is no real reason why your discharge might feel like gushing. Seek professional advice if you are concerned or if your normal discharge has changed for no reason.
Watery discharge with odour
You may want to seek some advice if you’ve noticed a funny smell. It could be a sign that something isn’t quite right. You may need to visit the doctor, who will conduct testing to ensure that you are safe. You may be given some medication or advice. A smell could still mean nothing is wrong, but it’s better to be safe.
Coloured discharge with odour
If your vaginal discharge is not clear and has an odour, you may have an infection, such as a vaginal yeast infection. A yeast infection can cause a burning sensation when peeing. They can be treated easily if you seek advice early. You may be asked to complete a urine sample that can be tested by a doctor. It could also be caused by bacterial vaginosis.
Abnormal discharge could also be a sign of sexually transmitted diseases, which will require treatment as soon as possible. Seeking advice early helps to reduce the risk of anything more serious occurring. Keep an eye on any other symptoms you notice. You may have clumpy discharge or brown discharge, too, which may need assessing. Seek advice immediately if you have abnormal bleeding with these symptoms.
There are many reasons why you may experience watery vaginal discharge that feels like urine. In most cases, watery discharge is totally normal. You should seek advice if you are worried or if your vaginal discharge is coloured or smells. This could be a sign of something that needs treatment.
Bodies are very clever, and vaginal discharge is a way for your body to keep itself clean and fight off harmful bacteria. Watery discharge and milky discharge are quite normal, but you know what’s normal for you. We hope this blog has been useful!
